Our Mission & Yoga

Our Mission at BodyMindLife

Yoga to us is a journey of liberation from our heads to our hearts. It is a way to celebrate life, movement, health, and vibrancy; a way to connect to ourselves while being part of a nurturing global community.

Yoga allows us to heal and strengthen our bodies, bring stillness to our minds, and fill our lives with inspiration, purpose, abundance, and fun! Yoga offers us a chance to come back to our centre, into balance, and tap into our innate wisdom and power of spirit.

Our mission at BodyMindLife Yoga is to provide uplifting, fun, and intelligent yoga – raising the vibration of life with love. We aim to inspire your journey inward toward strength with surrender, clarity and stillness, while encouraging you to find your own “inner teacher”.

We offer a range of fun and inspirational classes, workshops, programs, lifestyle education seminars, yoga adventure retreats, and teacher training courses. All of our offerings are led by exceptional teachers whose passion is reflected in their ability to inspire students to “live” their yoga…taking it off the mat and into the world.

Our Yoga

BodyMindLife teaches urban holistic yoga – transformational Power Vinyasa Yoga inspired by great teachers such as Baron Baptiste, Shiva Rea, Twee Merrigan, Wade Morissette, John Friend, and many more!

Our students are city-dwellers – modern people with modern needs. They lead busy, demanding lives and need yoga and wellness practices designed to fit that lifestyle. We recognise that modern individuals have very different lives to their ancestors, including the ancient sages who designed and passed on the great lineage of yoga.

So we’ve taken the most relevant practices from the ancient yogic traditions and blended them with a modern understanding of human physiology and psychology to create a practice that is real, inspiring, and transformational.

Our studio classes focus on yoga asana (postures) – the physical practice of yoga – to get you in touch with your body, move energy, and free up unwanted tension. But it doesn’t end there! Releasing tension from the physical body opens a gateway to access the deeper parts of your mind through pranayama (breath awareness), meditation, and whole-body relaxation. This is where the real yoga begins.

At BodyMindLife we’re all about helping you create the highest level of energy, vitality, and freedom possible in your life. The only way to do this is to leave the ego aside, give up pushing past your edge, and start working sensitively with yourself. There are no shortcuts in this process – you have to do the work – but by turning off the controlling mind, you’ll start to access your own innate wisdom.

In each class we create an environment that is inclusive and conducive to healing on every level – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Our teachers are all true yogis – committed to the path, and to creating a space for your personal growth.

Power Vinyasa Yoga

Our yoga is a continually evolving form of Hatha Yoga with roots in the wisdom of Sri T. Krishnamacharya, whose teachings have inspired three other classical forms of yoga: Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, and Desikachar’s Viniyoga.

“Vinyasa” means to arrange or place in a special way. This refers to the sequence of yoga asanas that move intelligently from simple to more complex, allowing your body to open up slowly without force. A Vinyasa Yoga practice involves linking movements together with fluid breathing; creating a meditation in motion that allows you to move with grace and ease.

“Power” relates to your own evolutionary process of becoming more of who you are meant to be – letting go of anything that holds you back from your true state of open-ness and one-ness with the web of life. It’s about finding your own true potential by letting go of negativity, competitiveness, and self-criticism. It’s about embodying the heart qualities of acceptance, compassion, truthfulness, passion, grace, and love.

A Power Vinyasa Yoga practice will definitely work your physical body, but in a highly sensitive way. During a Power Vinyasa Yoga class you will become more aware of yourself on every level including your bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions. Power Vinyasa Yoga helps you cultivate somatic intelligence, reconnecting mind and body into a fully conscious, vibrant whole. Tuning into yourself in this way allows you to work at a level that is just right for you. It’s a practice that also frees up the teacher inside; allowing the most positive qualities of your mind to guide you while diffusing any thoughts that might hinder your evolution to be the best you can possibly be.

I'm new to yoga, what do I do?

Surry Hills Studio

Our yoga classes are designed to build a healthy balance of flexibility, strength, agility, and grace; bringing your body, mind and life back into harmony.

Like a dynamic dance, Vinyasa Yoga integrates asanas (yoga postures) and flowing breath to bring about a transformative and balancing effect of your body, mind and spirit. This process builds conscious awareness – our goal at BodyMindLife Yoga!

No matter how long you have been practicing yoga, you will find our classes uplifting, energetic and rewarding. We warm the room to a gentle 30 degrees Celsius, so be prepared to sweat and have fun!

Progressive

Our Progressive classes are for those who want to challenge themselves in a safe and healthy way. In these classes our teachers use more creative sequencing aimed at building the strength and stability you’ll need to explore some of the more challenging asanas in a fun and playful way. You might experience a Shiva Rea-inspired Mandala/Fluid Power class, or some partner-assisting, or inversions – depending on what the teacher’s focus is for the day.

Open

Open classes are just that – open to everyone, from beginner to intermediate. If you’re new to Power Vinyasa Yoga, however, we suggest taking some Essentials classes first to learn some technique. An Open class will follow a flowing format of standing poses, balancing poses, forward bends, backward bends, twists, arm balances, hip openers, and inversions; finishing with deep relaxation and meditation. You’ll be flowing smoothly from one pose to the next, as each segment of the class is linked by a Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar). Each class will vary slightly depending on the teacher, but all classes will follow a general structure to ensure that your overall experience is balanced and cohesive.

Essentials

Our Essentials classes are highly recommended for those who are new to yoga or transitioning from a more static yoga practice like Bikram, Iyengar, or Hatha Yoga. Each Essentials class has a particular focus following a rolling eight-week program, which means that over several weeks you’ll be exposed to all the techniques you’ll need to ensure a safe and healthy practice. You’ll discover ways to modify your practice so that it’s less strenuous, while cultivating a strong foundation aimed at setting you up for success as you move forward in your yoga practice. Essentials classes are also great if you’re recovering from injury, returning to practice after a yoga sabbatical, or simply want to enjoy your practice with less intensity.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is the polar opposite to our dynamic flowing classes, and a superb complement to the more “yang” style of Power Vinyasa Yoga. Yin classes involve long, luxurious holds in restorative forward bends, hip openers, and inversions. You’ll focus on your breath like never before, and will experience deep release as we work through areas of the body that habitually hold tension and stress. Quietening of the mind is the supreme focus of these classes, as you work toward meditation and deep relaxation. A must for all yogis, beginner to advanced!

Community Class

Community classes are one-hour classes taught by fully qualified teachers who are just beginning their teaching journeys. These classes are open to all and are run on a donation-only basis ($5 suggested donation).

Prenatal

Yoga will support your health and well-being on many different levels throughout your pregnancy and is an excellent way to nourish mother-to-be and baby within. It is an ideal preparatory exercise while pregnant, combining the building of strength with the opportunity to relax and let go. It also offers a chance to practice useful skills for birthing. We offer specialist training in cultivating breath awareness, strength, flexibility and the necessary surrender for mothers to be.
